THE SHEFFIELD STAR
16th January 2003

An auction during a talk by a reformed football hooligan in Rotherham raised more than £2,000 for the family of murdered club promoter Lester Divers.

Ex-boxer Frank Bruno, prison ‘hard man’ Charles Bronson and Kate Kray, the widow of Kray Twin Ronnie, were among household names who donated memorabilia.

More than 150 people – including members of notorious football supporters’ groups such as the Blades Business Crew and the Inter City Firm – heard Cass Pennant talk about his life of violence on the terraces when he made a guest appearance at Rawmarsh Trades Club.

He was a central figure in West Ham’s ICF in the 1970s and ‘80s – and was involved in football violence at grounds across the country. Since then he says he has renounced his past and now campaigns against hooliganism.

Lester Divers, aged 32, was shot in the head outside his home in Freedom Road, Walkley, on New Year’s Day and detective are still hunting his killer.

The Sheffield United fan had friends in the Blades Business Crew.
There had been fears that the appearance by Cass Pennant could spark problems – but the club said there had been no trouble.
Committee member Ron Maiden said: ‘It was a good night and there were no problems at all. There was apprehension about staging this event and some people had feared trouble but it all worked out well.’
