A reformed soccer hooligan will tonight tell how he gave up violence on the terraces when he talks at a club in Rotherham. Cass Pennant was a central figure in West Hams Inner City Firm in the 1970s and 80s causing chaos at football grounds across the country. Since then he has renounced his past and written a book on soccer violence Congratulations You Have Just Met The ICF. Cass, 43, is appearing
at Rawmarsh Trades and Labour Club tonight but the move upset
some club members who feared it could spark off a confrontation between
rival soccer fans. The appearance has been advertised on internet websites,
including the Blades Business Crew site but today the police
said the event will go ahead. Supt Steve Parry,
of Rotherham, said: We have talked to the club and are now happy
that the event should go ahead. This chap has been doing talks all over
the country as part of a campaign to help stamp out soccer hooliganism. He goes into
schools in London to warn young people against getting involved in soccer
violence. After talking to our own soccer liaison officers and monitoring
supporters websites we have decided there is no reason why it
should be called off. However, we shall be monitoring the event and
making sure there are enough officers on duty. More than 100 tickets have been sold at £5 a head and more are expected to turn out on the night. |
